Gags are often used for stronger horses and are commonly seen in cross country and show jumping where the head needs to be quickly raised and control gained again after a jump. The bit can be used to both lower the head through poll pressure and give you leverage and result in a head raising action. When the two are combined this will result in a head raising action.
