Visit The Tack Box, Inc. April 28 – May 6 for BETA Safety Week!
The Tack Box, Inc. is excited to partner with Charles Owen and the British Equestrian Trade Association in the inaugural BETA Safety Week 2018! BETA Safety Week is a brand-new, annual educational and safety initiative designed to put rider safety firmly on the map. The goal is to help educate riders in all disciplines about the importance of safety gear and equipment and its proper use. It will allow riders to ensure that their safety gear is properly fitted and up to the latest safety standards.
From April 28th to May 6th you can bring your helmet, protective vest or other safety equipment to our store and we will check that it is up to standard and fits properly. What you can expect when you come into our store?
If you need your riding helmet checked, we’ll explain to you what the latest safety standards are and whether your helmet is meeting them. All riding helmet manufacturers have to produce helmets to meet one of three international safety standards and some may even produce helmets to meet all three. These standards are based on how much of the head a helmet covers, how a rider falls and onto what type of surface, how a helmet moves, and how severe an injury riders can expect to receive from that fall. Some standards look closely at preventing the most severe types of head injuries a rider may experience while others protect from the more commonplace.
While your riding helmet may meet safety standards, if it doesn’t fit properly, it can’t do its job of protecting you in a fall. We’ll check how your helmet fits your head and look at the following:
- Fit of the harness and chinstrap
- Stability on your head
Want to learn more? Read how Charles Owen fits helmets.
We’ll also check the age of the helmet and ask if you’ve had any falls in it. Unfortunately, riding helmets don’t last forever. Their average lifespan is five years and they should be replaced at that time. If you’ve had a hard fall, your helmet should be replaced as soon as possible as it may not provide adequate protection.
If you need a new helmet we carry helmets from several manufacturers and we’ll help you find the one that fits you the best. Visit our Riding Helmet Page to see them.
When you bring your protective vest to our store we’ll check the following:
- How it fits
- It’s correctly fastened
- It meets appropriate safety standards
BETA Safety Week 2018 has the support of The Pony Club, British Eventing and British Riding Clubs as well as some of the most famous equestrians including William Fox Pitt, Charlotte Dujardin and Beezie Madden.
We look forward to seeing you at the store!
